Have You Got a Meta Tag?

It's your no-cost ad on major search engines

Meta tag descriptions can serve as your free ad on major search
engines. Instead of Google picking some text off your site to
accompany your link, your meta tag description will be displayed
exactly the way you wrote it.

Instead of your search engine description being "we saw a lot of
customers on our latest trip.."

...your description will be "Joe Jones, antique expert and
appraiser. Find out exactly what your stuff is worth. 555-1212."

You can't see a meta tag while looking at your page. It is a
simple code in the HTML behind your page.

Your Meta Tag goes near the top of your page's html between the
head tags. Click the right mouse key (for PC users)
on any good web page, then choose "view source," and you will see
the HTML code.

Here's a trick. Go to a site like yours that ranks tops on search
engines. See which keywords they are using in their Meta Tag.
Work some of their good ideas into your own Meta Tag.

I asked last week "Does anyone know what happened to Bill Platt
of PhantomWriters?" I heard from several people who said the
well known article distributor didn't seem to be answering
email, checking his phone messages, or distributing articles
any more.

One reader of this newsletter eventually contacted Bill and
learned he hit a rough patch in life and hasn't distributed
articles since last year. Bill said he would refund everyone's
money and distribute their articles for free.

I spent $200 on Bill Platt's service Jan 1 but no articles
were distributed. I didn't receive answers to my many emails
and phone calls, and certainly no refund.

This sad story reminds us all what hard times can do to
otherwise successful businesses. When sales are slow it's
tempting to walk away from the business and focus on more
productive projects.

In those cases, please take down your order page. Accepting
orders and ignoring them while banking the funds is theft.
It's a dishonest act that destroys customer confidence and
hurts us all.

Meanwhile, I hope Bill gets back on his feet and resumes his
fine service. We need him.

Win The Battle But Lose the War?

Got a customer who is driving you nuts? It pays to stop a moment
and consider alternatives before you tell them to get lost. Often
what feels best at the moment is not the best for business in the
long run.

Consider Macy's, a local grocery chain, who took a strong law-
and-order approach to store policies. They harshly prosecuted
even young children who ran afoul of regulations. It felt good at
the time, but lots of angry customers started staying away.

You've probably experienced an irrate customer who came to your
store or web site with a skewed point of view, causing them to
misinterpret everything you said and wrote. Your best intentions
can be turned up-side-down. It's tempting to lash back at them
tit for tat.

Unfortunately, bad news travels fast. Angry customers tell lots
of friends and their unflattering view of your business can get
around. You can stop bad word-of-mouth by dishing out kindness
and understanding (even if you have to force the sentiment just a
bit). Look for ways to make your policies and marketing materials
easier to understand even for the person who is looking at you
from the worst possible point of view.

Find the Right Audience For Your Offer

Why does advertising NOT work? Why do some products and services
fail to sell as much as they should? Usually it is because the
offer did not reach the right audience. No matter what you are
selling, there are thousands of people who would buy immediately
if they only knew about you.

Reaching the right audience can be difficult. If you have been in
business very long at all, you have probably placed a few ads
that didn't bring in response. Perhaps you placed the same ad in
a second publication that flooded your email and telephone with
inquiries.

Here's how to determine the audience media attracts: For larger
media--like radio, TV, and daily newspapers--you can use ratings
info to zero in on the audience a media outlet reaches. This
information is sometimes published in the newspaper and is always
available through the respective trade publications of various
media (check your local library.) Check http://www.srds.com.
Google can often find ratings posted on various sites.

You can also get ratings info from ad agencies, media sales
departments (take 'em with a grain of salt), and by striking up a
conversation with someone in media.

For Internet and print publications, determine the audience they
reach by looking at the kinds of articles they carry. If you see
a lot of how-to business tips (like in this publication) you can
bet they have a big audience of innovation-oriented
entrepreneurs.

Use Your Web Site Title to Get on Search Engines

These days search engines can pull in a huge audience for your
web site. Now that half of all North Americans are online with
millions in other countries logging on the Internet each week,
search engines are becoming the Yellow Pages of Cyberspace.

Make sure your site gets listed by having a Title that appeals to
search engines. Engine computers often place the most emphasis on
your Title--that line that appears in a box at the top or bottom
of your browser screen.

Think of the word or words most people are going to use to search
for a site like yours. Include that most important word in your
Title twice if you can. For example, if your most important
keyword is "bacon," your title might be:

Bacon Center features the world's best bacon

If your most important keyword is "marketing," your title could
use two forms of the same word: Market your business with these
marketing ideas.

A Title that says "Welcome to our site," or "Joe's Barber Shop"
may look OK to visitors, but it offers very little for search
engine robots that are thirsting for some way to classify your
site.

How Much Is Your Product or Service REALLY Worth?

Your product or service is likely worth a LOT more than the price
people pay for it. If you think in terms of how much more people
can earn after they buy from you, or how much time they can save,
or grief they can avoid--your product or service is worth quite a
lot.

Once, when I remarked that Jeffrey Lant's books were a bit
pricey, he told me, "Yes, but the price is nothing compared to
how much people can earn if they use the advice and know-how in
those books." Right he was.

Increase the value of what you sell by showing customers the
valuable benefits they will get after they buy. Your guarantee
could reflect this-- "Earn three times as much as you paid or
your money back."

Tell about the good experiences some customers had with your
product or service. I wrote a press release for a woman who used
it to get on Oprah, a major news magazine, and leading
publications in her industry. I can demonstrate the value of my
$75 press release by showing the $100,000 worth of free publicity
my client received.

Be the Problem Solver

Here is an almost surefire way to make prospects buy, customers
like you, and dissatisfied shoppers leave happy.

Always present yourself as The Problem Solver.

No matter what you are selling, people buy from you because you
can solve their problem. A plumber fixes drains, an accountant
solves tax headaches, and a counselor betters damaged confidence.
All are problem solvers. I buy from you because you have a
solution for my pressing problem.

Try to identify the customer's problem early in the sales
process. One sales person always opens her pitch with, "Is there
a problem I can help you with today?" I open my web site copy
with a question that gets to the root of the reader's discomfort
("Need new ways to promote your business?").

Look at what you sell. What problems are you solving?

Have your marketing materials remind prospects of these problems.
Make the problems sound worse. Then present your products and
services as the solution.

When a customer is unhappy, offer to refund their moneyh. Then
suggest something else you sell that could better solve their
problem

Don't Send a Resume, Send a Bio

Press kits and sales packages should include background
information on you and your company. Many people, especially
professionals, include a resume. A one page bio works much
better. You can include a one page bio on yourself and anther bio
on your organization.

Start with a catchy first few sentences that give you the right
slant. "John Jones has been interested in selling ever since he
opened a lemonade stand at the age of 10. His mother called him
in well after dark to find he had sold over 2,000 cups. John's
determination to succeed continues today as he builds innovative
web sites for dozens of companies."

In the next few paragraphs you can go back and fill in more
details. Tell what John studied in college, how he joined togther
with two classmates to form his first company, and how they slept
on the couch their first year while plowing profits into
development.

The bio takes the info that might be in your resume and puts it
in a more entertaining and readable form.
