How Much Marketing is Enough

People often write to ask how much a business should spend on
marketing each month. It's usually because their boss or partner
doesn't like to spend on marketing and they want to build a case
for an increase.

There's no easy answer. Different businesses need to spend
different amounts. You might do quite well simply sending your
customers a Christmas card each year, or you might need to spend
as much as 80 cents on every dollar for advertising.

It's better to look for signs that you aren't marketing enough.
If the signs appear, market more.

If your sales are primarily motivated by lowering your price, you
probably don't have enough marketing.

If you are jumping from one sales gimmick to another, you
probably aren't marketing enough.

If your steady customers say "I didn't know you offered that,"
you probably aren't marketing enough.

Nothing Sells Like Raves From Past Customers

I used to work in radio. If we really wanted listeners to pay
attention to us, we didn't talk to the listeners ourselves. We
had another listener deliver the message. Nothing gets the
audience's attention like raves from a fellow audience member.

Notice how often stations use this trick. "What a great station!
I listen while I'm at work! It's great in the car!"

Testimonials are by far the most effective form of advertising.
People are often skeptical about ad claims, but they almost
always believe another customer. When a customer says something
nice about your product or service, ask if you can use their
comment. They will almost always say yes.

Some customers are happy to let you write their comments for
them. Just ask.

If your business is brand new, get testimonials from friends,
experts, or anyone who will give you a "hey, this looks good to
me" type of comment.

Put testimonials all over your web site. Use a testimonial in
your ad or sales letter (in fact, it's not a bad idea to headline
your ad with a testimonial).

Making A Small Store GO!

I just got a note from a 19 year-old business student who is
determined to start her own business. "It's a trendy clothing
shop. I have the location, the start-up money, a lawyer, and an
accountant" she wrote enthusiastically. "My parents think I'm in
over my head but I'm determined to make my dream come true."

That's a situation most of us can identify with. You've got a
great idea for a new business and you've done every bit of
preparation you can, but in the back of your mind you know you
could fail. What can you do to make a small store go?

By far the most important factor is location. If at all possible,
find a location you can afford that has built-in customer
traffic. Mall locations are great but often too expensive. Look
for a nook near a group of stores or on a major street that
brings a steady flow of shoppers--the kind of shoppers who would
be interested in your store.

Find an affordable way to promote that reaches your best
prospective customers. Look at radio ads, space in small
newspapers, flyers, cable TV, and postcard campaigns. Make sure
you have enough budget to continue your marketing campaign for
several months. If you can't clearly see how you can effectively
market your store, stop immediately and reevaluate your plan.

Market With Gift Certificates

There is a great little restaurant down the street from me. They
have good food and friendly service, but it's a shoestring
operation that has to keep on their toes to make payroll. They
did a very smart thing during the holiday season.

When I went to the cash register to pay my tab the waiter handed
me a $15 gift certificate. "That's a gift to thank you for coming
in each week," he said. How can this struggling restaurant afford
to give away gift certificates?

I noticed a big pile of these gift certificates next to the cash
register. Obviously they were handing these freebies out to all
their customers.

It's a very smart move. While $15 is a nice amount, my tab always
comes to more. I'm sure that is the case for almost all their
customers. During the cold, dark months of January and February
when others restaurants have lots of empty tables, this little
restaurant is packed with customers returning with their gift
certificates. The amount deducted from each tab is considered a
small price for having the place filled during otherwise slow
months.

Have a Contest For Your Business

I spent many years working in radio. During that time I *never*
worked for a radio station that wasn't carrying on a major
contest at all times.

Radio people feel almost naked without a car giveaway, CD blow
out, or vacation getaway up for grabs.

Not everyone will play a contest (in fact, there's a consistent
percentage that think all contests are rigged). Nevertheless,
about 20% of the public will play a contest. In total numbers,
that's a lot of people. If you could increase your customer base
by 20% you would be doing significantly more business. That would
be even more substantial if the 20% were very active customers
(which contest players tend to be).

Contests can be a very good way to get a lot of people more
involved in your business and increase sales. Give away a product
or service that relates to your business. Include a mention of
your contest in all your marketing, letters, and email. Be sure
to follow-up after the contest and let customers and visitors
know who won the contest and how they are using and enjoying the
prize. This follow-up can often be the part people remember the
most from your contest campaign.

Use Email to Follow-up and Increase Sales

Email is great for staying in touch with customers and prospects.
It's almost free compared to mailing letters and postcards. Email
is also far less time consuming (and perhaps more efficient) than
trying to reach customers and prospects by telephone.

Send out regular messages to stay in contact. Most sales are
dependent on repeated contact. High ticket items and services
almost always need multiple contacts to sell. Advertising wisdom
on this ranges from "The Rule of 7" (you need to hit your
prospect with your sales message seven time before she buys) to
the old saying "the first ad never sells anything."

How do you stay in email contact with customers and prospects
without becoming a pest? People like informative newsletters,
short tip sheets, friendly notes, and announcements of special
offers. Read an article you think would be appreciated by your
clients? Ask the author if you can share his article with your
contact list. Most authors don't mind a bit if you use their
article as long as you include their contact info at the end.
