Team Up With Internet Advertisers

**Prospects appreciate courtesy. Begin by asking if it is a good

Have several dates and times ready for suggestion.
**Jot down a few notes before making your call, then use your

immediately after the call so you can remember exactly what was
said when it comes time to call again.
**Don't wait too long to ask for the sale.

Promote To Local Media

Media are constantly looking for new stories and information that
will interest their audiences.
Chances are, your town has at least one major newspaper, several
smaller papers, a few TV stations, a bunch of radio stations, and
at least one cable company.
Local media like to cover local stories. You have a much better
chance of getting free publicity from a reporter in your area
than from national media.
Send media a press release when you have something new to
announce: a new product, service, public service program, or
alliance with another business.
Small businesses often make good feature stories. Work up a sheet
of helpful tips related to your business. Make sure they are
things the media audience will be interested in.
Local talk radio stations and programs are constantly in need of
interesting guests. Watch for times when your area of expertise
fits with a breaking story, holiday, or issue the media is
covering.
Work with local charities and blow your own horn.

Replace Your Business Card With a One Sheet

The problem with business cards is they generally don't give
enough information about your business. They only have room
for
your most basic contact info and maybe a slogan line about
what
you do.
A business card can't list your hottest services, your
latest
products, your upcoming bargains, or your philosophy on
customer
service.
These are often the factors that turn a meeting into a sale.
Instead of handing out cards (or in ADDITION to handing out
cards), pass out a one sheet. This is exactly what it sounds
like, a single sheet of 8x11 paper printed on one or both
sides
listing all the benefits I mentioned above.
Start your one sheet off with a headline at the top touting
your
most impressive and popular benefit. What is it you provide
that
customers almost always go for? Next include a sub heading
that
explains your business a little more.
Follow that with a graphic (your photo, a picture of your
building, etc.) and a pack of bulleted features/benefits.
Also
include testimonials from satisfied customers or recognized
experts in your field.

Convert Business Language into People Language

Jargon tends to creep into our language no matter what
business
we're in. When I meet with teachers at my kid's parent
conference, they use a lot of terms and codes I don't
understand.
We tend to do the same thing in business. A letter or email
to a
customer can use business-speak phrases like "in our
considered
opinion" and "enclosed please find." Simplify
these into everyday
language: "we think" and "here is."
Often we use jargon and complex phrases in an effort to seem
smart, serious, professional, or give our ideas more weight.
While that may be a smart thing to do when communicating
with
other workers in your field, customers react best to
straight,
plain talk.
After you write something, try to speak the same ideas. If
you
are saying something you wouldn't say in normal spoken
conversation, change it to sound more natural.
This ability to put even complex ideas into everyday
language is
the hallmark of many successful politicians. They know their
careers depend on helping voters connect with their ideas.
