Better, Faster, Cheaper

If there is one thing that the Internet and smart phones have
done, it has been to force everything in business toward "better,
faster, cheaper."
All these new forms of communication let customers easily shop
with more of your competitors. That means more variety, bigger
selection, and sometimes lower prices and better service for
customers.
It also means a LOT more pressure on businesses to cut costs and
offer better service. In some industries, the trend is simply
unavoidable. When computer manufacturers tried to raise the price
of computers, the strategy backfired. Customers simply weren't
willing to pay for a product that wasn't cheaper and better.
In the past, when consumers couldn't search the Internet for
almost anything under the sun, many would pay higher prices and
wait longer for delivery simply because they didn't have any
other easy choice. You may STILL be able to take your time and
keep prices high if customers don't have many choices or PERCEIVE
they don't have many choices (for example, if you're the best in
your biz and buying from anyone else would mean settling for less
quality).

Marketing a Small Town Business

A lot of people who read these articles live in small towns.
Smaller communities are great places to live, but they often
offer fewer opportunities to earn an income. People in rural
communities have long known their best chance to succeed can be
in owning and operating their own business.
How do you market a small town business (or a neighborhood
business in a city--which works much the same way)?
Start with the oldest and most effective form of marketing known.
Talk to people. Smile, look them in the eye, and tell them about
your business and how what you sell can help them. You don't have
to do a hard sell, but give people you know or meet the lowdown
on what you've been up to. In small towns, that kind of local,
personal information is as important as the morning headlines.
Talk to the editor of the nearest newspaper about doing a feature
story on you and your business. Make a point of noting the
interesting or helpful information you can provide for the
article.
Check the price of radio and cable TV ads. It's not unusual to
buy these commercials for a few dollars each in small
communities. And don't forget no-cost Craigslist, a staple for
many small communities.

How to Design a Print Ad

Got a display ad coming up in the local paper? Distributing
flyers on cars in your area? Are you including a sales one
sheet
in this month's invoices to customers?
Here is a simple and effective way to lay out a print ad.
Start
with a headline in large bold letters. You can phrase it
like a
question to pull people into the rest of your copy.
WANT TO LOWER YOUR PHONE BILL?
Follow that with a sentence in large, bold letters that
explains
your offer.
"Make calls to anywhere in the world at any time of the
week 24
hours a day for just 1 cent a minute."
Below that insert a photo, illustration, or graphic to add
life
to your ad. Then list your main features paired with the
benefits
they provide. Write them in bulleted form for quick and easy
reading.
Finally, tell people how they can buy. Give them several
ways to
contact you. Include your phone, email, web site, and
physical
location.

11,000 Media Contacts

These days media organizations are having to do more with
fewer
people and smaller budgets. This means your local TV, radio,
or
newspaper outlet may be paying a lot more attention to press
releases which give them a free source of ideas and story
leads.
There has never been a better time to write your press
release
and send it out to media. How many media are there? It
depends
what you're trying to do with your press release.
There are several PR companies online these days offering to
send
your release to 11,000 or more contacts. Most of these lists
are
packed with very specialized publications (like the Drinking
Water Journal) and ezines who have no interest in your
release.
I've found there are about 5,000 media outlets at any given
time
that are interested in receiving press releases on a wide
range
of topics. These are TV, daily and weekly newspapers, a few
news
services, some online news services, and a small handful of
general interest magazines. The vast majority of contacts on
any
list are radio stations whose numbers account for more than
half
of media in North America.
Also look for lists of media who specialize in covering your
industry. If you sell computer books, you might look for a
computer industry list and an education list. These more
specialized lists range from 6 contacts to almost 200
depending
on the subject area.
Beyond that, you don't need to worry about targeting. All
major
media outlets have a person who goes through releases and
targets
them to the editor or reporter who covers your topic.
Doing your own PR on the cheap? Check out PR.com's free
service.
Not bad for free and pretty good at getting you on big
online
news sites, but they don't publicize MLM or affiliate
programs.
