Your Life as a Story in the Press

Recently I read through Ray Kroc's book "Grinding It Out" about
how he created McDonalds. Then I picked up Dave Thomas' "Dave's
Way" on how he started Wendy's.
Both books make you admire these giants of fast food and both
were written by capable ghost writers.
There's a good lesson here that is well known to CEO's and
wealthy entrepreneurs. You can have a professional writer create

Choosing A Name

This time of year lots of people start new businesses. One of the
most important decisions you will make about your project will
come right at the beginning when you choose a name.
Your business name should be something that focuses on what you
do, but doesn't limit you from expanding later on. If you open a
bookstore and call it "Smith's Business Books," that will work
fine until you decide to add mystery books.
Your business name should be easy to spell. When I was a kid my
dad had a business with the word "aerial" in it. For 40 years he
was frustrated that many people couldn't spell it (and I must
admit, I had to use the spell checker to make sure I got it right
just then).
Make sure your new name doesn't have a negative meaning for some
people. "Cheap" isn't a good name for a wine store but might work
for school supplies. I've learned people don't want web copy that
we wrote in a "rush" even though that word is tops for a delivery
firm.

Do Something Nice

Nothing promotes your business like good word of mouth. When
someone has a good experience with your company and tells other
people about it, their word of mouth is the most powerful form of
advertising known.
A friend or associate telling you a product or service is good is
vastly more effective than even the most expensive network TV
commercial. We believe what friends tells us and often act on
their advice.
I don't have any scientific proof that this is true, but I
strongly suspect that doing something nice for someone is a major
source of good word of mouth.
Make a point of doing something nice for a customer or prospect
every day. This is especially rewarding when that person is
someone who emailed you, sent you a letter, called you, or
visited your store. These "active" people are the same ones who
will take time to tell others about their experience.

employees work longer hours, random acts of kindness may be
getting harder to find.

Your Company Backgrounder

If you really want to impress media, include a company
backgrounder when you send them a press release.
Your backgrounder tells a reporter all the who-what-why- where-
when about your company. This may be the additional information a
reporter, editor, or producer really needs to understand just how
good a story your business can be.
A backgrounder should include a rundown on the market or
opportunity your company goes after. It should also contain a
history of you and your firm. Tell how you got started and why
you do what you do (that's usually the part that gives a story
its interest).
Put in a products section that lists and explains you major
products and services. You might also spend some space discussing
your overall industry, including a few facts about your
competitors. This is especially helpful if you suspect editors
don't know much about your industry.
