Advertising and marketing are two of the most expensive and
necessary parts of running a business. Whether you have a service
outlet in a strip mall or a web site, getting people through the
front door is never cheap.

Here are three simple ways to make your ad dollars go further:

1. Stay with a single ad campaign. Pick something that is
important to customers, promote it, and stick with your message.
Each time your ad runs it builds upon the last time.

2. Don't waste money on fancy stuff. Make your ad no better than
it has to be. There are plenty of designers, copywriters,
producers, and ad agencies who will push you to spend more. Make
sure it really will make your advertising more effective,
otherwise don't spend extra.

3. Buy small ads regularly. That is better than plowing all your
money into one big ad that runs only now and again. Consistency,
even when it is small, builds sales.

Star In Your Own Radio, TV, and Newpaper Ads

Years ago I did a radio morning show in Oklahoma City. In our
search for comedy material, we were blessed with five or six
local merchants who appeared in their own commercials.

None of these people were what you would have thought of as ready
for prime time. One Chevy dealer was a round man with a speech
impediment. Two brothers with a furniture store were way too
enthusiastic. A woman who owned an electronics outlet was almost
too short to show up on camera. Husband and wife jewelry store
owners did their own TV spots with about as much energy as an
aging hound dog.

All of them had been on the air for years. The furniture guys
were actually the second generation of their family to flood TV
with their commercials.

Decades later I spoke with a guy who works in Oklahoma City media
and discovered all these advertisers were STILL doing their own
commercials 20 years later.

Moral to the story: Appear in your own commercials. If your teeth
aren't straight, your hair isn't perfect, and you don't sound
like an announcer--all the better. Customers respond when people
in commercials look and sound like REAL people. Customers love it
when they feel like they know the person behind the business.

Offer Your Own Email Course

One of the most successful marketing techniques I've found is
offering your own course via autoresponders. My original
"Make Your Website Sell" course got 15,000 sign-ups.

Here is how to create yours:

1. Pick a problem that lots of your customers struggle with. In
my business the big stumpers are getting a site that sells,
finding a way to handle email, figuring out search engines, and
finding low-cost ways to advertise effectively.

A course on any of these is guaranteed to bring lots of
interested prospects and customers (and you can bet I'm plugging
my ads here and there during the course).

Your course could be on how to complete a basement, how to avoid
an IRS audit, how to give your kids straight teeth, or anything
else that customers often ask about.

2. If you don't write or have time to pen your own articles, look
for others who have written on the topic. It is perfectly legal
to put their ideas in your own words (always proper to give them
credit).

You can also quote the article. It is best to ask in advance, if
your course is for commercial purposes. Start your article, then
say expert Jane Doe has some valuable information. Include a few
paragraphs of what Jane wrote.

Be careful not to use so much you give away her entire article
and spoil her ability to sell the information.

Include a Benefit In Your One-Liner

just one line, include a benefit. Give people a reason to contact
you, email you, or drop by your store.

Nobody does anything without getting something good in return,
even if it is just a good feeling.

Including a benefit in even the shortest ad blurbs super charges

A school teacher who helps other educators with innovative
strategies showed me her new promotional pencils. While most
businesses simply have their name and phone number listed on
promotional items, the teacher added a benefit.

Make Your Web Site Deeper

Nielsen, the famous media ratings company, recently told us there
has been a big change in the way people browse the Net.

In recent months people are surfing far fewer sites, but spending
a lot more time on the sites they visit. You may have noticed
this change in your own Internet use. I've seen it in mine.

Instead of finding big lists of web sites and hopping from one to
another, I have a small list of favorites I visit often and
explore extensively.

This may mean you need to design your web site in a different
way. Add more content, more levels, and with additional detail.
If someone wants to spend 20 minutes on your site, is there
enough to keep them busy?

Frankly, this change in how customers use the web can be a very
good thing. It is hard to make a sale when people are intent on
getting to the next site. More time spent on your site means more
of a commitment to buy.

It also means fewer sales abandoned at the shopping cart.
Prospects don't want to walk away empty-handed after spending a
big chunk of their valuable time studying your site.

Three Letter Autoresponder Follow-up

A woman told me this week, "Your advertising is wasted if you
don't follow-up on your leads." Her solution is to use a multiple
autoresponder that sends her prospects a new sales message very
few days.

People need to see your ad message several times before they buy.
Those who buy on the first ad have already made up their mind
after seeing someone else's ad. Yours had the good fortune of
reaching the customer at just the right time.

You can greatly increase sales with a three letter multiple
autoresponder. There are a number of places to get these
autoresponders free (fastfacts.net, getresponse.com,
smartbotpro.com) and others who sell up-graded service at low
cost.

Make your first letter briefly present your offer. It should be
designed to get attention and bring in those who tend to quickly
make up their minds to buy.

Your second sales letter should arrive the next day. Make it
longer and filled with details. About 70 percent of consumers are
folks who need ALL the details before they will purchase. List
your features and connect them with the benefit your customer
will get from those features.

Your third sales letter should be scheduled to arrive several
days later. Start with "Successful people are busy. I know you
probably saw my earlier messages, considered them, but haven't
yet had time to respond."

Then give them another rundown on your offer. Bring in a fresh
angle so it doesn't seem like they are reading the same letter
they saw a few days ago.

More than three sales letters tend to get ignored. If you want to
send more, have your fourth and fifth letters arrive weeks or
months later. Scheduling a new letter to arrive every month can
catch a prospect when they're ready to buy.

Market to New Employees

If your job is to sell to businesses, make your pitch to new
employees. New managers and department heads are often eager to
make changes and are easier to interest in a different product or
service.

New receptionists and secretaries are more likely to let you
through to the person who writes the checks, even if you aren't a
familiar face.

Long-time employees tend to cherish old ways of doing things
(this isn't an iron-clad rule, but you will see it is often the
case). By our human nature, we all tend to want to fend off
change once we have become accustomed to the situation.

New employees are eager to prove they have fresh ideas that can
improve the company. They are usually less comfortable with old
ways of doing things.

Watch newsletters, trade publications, and the business section
of your local paper for personnel changes.

Convert Business Language into People Language

Jargon tends to creep into our language no matter what business
we're in. When I meet with teachers at my kid's parent
conference, they use a lot of terms and codes I don't understand.

We tend to do the same thing in business. A letter or email to a
customer can use business-speak phrases like "in our considered
opinion" and "enclosed please find." Simplify these into everyday
language: "we think" and "here is."

Often we use jargon and complex phrases in an effort to seem
smart, serious, professional, or give our ideas more weight.
While that may be a smart thing to do when communicating with
other workers in your field, customers react best to straight,
plain talk.

After you write something, try to speak the same ideas. If you
are saying something you wouldn't say in normal spoken
conversation, change it to sound more natural.

This ability to put even complex ideas into everyday language is
the hallmark of many successful politicians. They know their
careers depend on helping voters connect with their ideas.
