If Your Advertising Isn't Working....It May Be The Product

I've seen some good folks pour a trundle of money into
advertising products and services, only to come up empty handed.
"The ads didn't work!" they said in exasperation.

If you try good targeted advertising, you keep at it for a while,
and yet nothing sells, step back. First take a look at your ad,
then at your product.

A product that is only slightly different from many other
products probably won't pass the "just noticeable difference
test." That is where YOU notice the difference, but it's not
different enough for customers to notice.

Price is also an important factor. If what you're selling could
also be found at Walmart, or Staples, or Amazon.com at a cheaper
price, your product or service had better offer a whole lot more
to support a higher price.

Finally, your product or service may be too new--people just
don't understand it--or it solves a need few people recognize
they have.

Get Banners That Work

Recent figures show Internet ad banners now only get about one
person in 100 to click on them and go to the advertiser's site.
That is not nearly as good as banners once did, but it is right
in line with the response you get from other kinds of
advertising.

There is good news here. With some of the shine coming off
banners as an ad tool, there are many top sites in your industry

There are also good ways to make your banner work better:

* Design your banner as large as allowed. Bigger gets attention,
pure and simple.

* New studies show people take only one second to glance at your
banner. If you don't grab them then, you've lost them. Your

that reinforces your message.

*Don't take the soft sell approach. A banner that surprises,
shocks, entertains, or appeals to a strong special interest will
get more clicks.

The Problem With Those LONG Web Site Letters

In recent years it has become very popular to sell a product on
your web site with a long sales letter. Many of these letters go
from 9 to 25 pages when pasted into a word processor.

The trend started when several savvy Internet entrepreneurs
noticed that 12 page sales letters work well for regular mail
advertising, so why no put a long letter on their web site?

That worked great for some, but it is working less and less for
others. Just about every day I hear from someone with a long web
site letter that isn't selling anything for them.

I think I know why. How many of you love to read long, long copy
on a computer? Not I (and I have to gulp hard to say this since
I've got doznes of long articles on my site). For those of us who
learned to read before the Internet, reading a long newspaper
article or a book is OK, but long letters on a computer screen
leave us a little cold.

The average web site visitor checks your headline to get a basic
understanding of what the page has to offer her. Then she reads
the first few paragraphs. If they don't impress her that you've
got what she needs, she's gone.

If she IS interested, she will skim down through your copy to
catch you major points. If that tells her this really IS
something she wants to consider, she'll go back to the top and
read the whole page carefully.

We've found that most people read the headline, the first few
paragraphs, then skip down to the next several paragraphs that
include a bold font. Highlight your key benefits and features for
quick reading.

Most of your sales will come from the 17% or so who decide right
away that they want to buy the product and don't particularly
care about all the details. You might want to put order links at
the top, middle, and end of the page, to cater to those
customers.

Easy PR With Radio

Some of the easiest PR to get is from radio. Radio stations
usually make up more than half of the contacts list in any media
guide. There are thousands of stations in the US and Canada
looking for interesting, topical, and entertaining guests.

While radio has a huge reach, they get a fraction of the
advertising pie--daily newspapers get 80% in most markets.
Stations have few staff, yet must come up with local programming
around the clock.

News/talk stations and shows are particularly pressed to get
guests. Any local talk show host will tell you it's murder trying
to do a show entirely from listener call-ins.

There are two approaches to getting on the air:

* Go the formal route. Call the station, talk with the host or
producer, tell why you would be dynamite for their audience. Then
show up with your bio and Q&A in hand.

* Or be more informal. Simply call in when you feel you have
something worthwhile to add. It's not unheard of to show up at
the studio bearing free food.

I was a radio morning DJ for many years and would praise the gods
when someone interesting would call or show up to lighten the
load.
