Give Stuff Away for Better Profits

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

In order to increase sales, you need to put your name in the
minds of customers. This involves creating a relationship with
them, so the next time they need products or services like yours,
you're the first one they think of. The idea may seem
complicated, but it really isn't. And, it doesn't have to be
difficult to implement, either.

So how do you create the kind of customer relationships that
everyone talks so much about? Well, there are a number of ways,
including giving great customer service, offering customers a
good value, and building a fun, down-to-earth, or warm and fuzzy
image for yourself and your business.

There is another way, however, to solidify your image as a
customer-friendly business that you may not be thinking of. One
warning, however: it does involve one four-letter "F" word--FREE.

Giving away free stuff, even if it's just your advice, shows
people that you're willing to help them out--that you're more of
a friend than someone vying for their business. Free information
your customers can use, free samples of your product, pens with
your logo on them, or vouchers for food or travel can make great
incentives that help your customers remember you. A local candy
company used to sell salt water taffy with their name printed on
it, and with a special order, would print your own company's
message to be handed out to your customers.

In short, there are plenty of ways to remind people you exist.
Giving a way even the smallest of freebies can help your bottom
line immensely.

A Plan For Promoting an Affiliate Program

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Affiliate programs are a great way to earn a little extra
money each month working the Internet. While some
people earn up to $1,000 or more per month, most who
work affiliate programs seriously land $200 to $700.

Here's a brief plan for making money with these programs:
1. Put a two or three line ad about the program in the
signature file of all your emails (that bit of info that goes
after your note). "Sig" files are a powerful way to include a
marketing message along with your personal
notes--probably the most effective marketing tool of all.

2. Get your own web site. It's hard to establish your own
identity and customer trust if you are sending people to a
generic site provided by the program. You can get a domain
name and forwarding for about $14 from http://oriweb.com.

3. Place paid ads in ezines and on AOL (where a massive
55 million visitors roam).

More Places to Get Your Articles Seen

If you own a web site, you probably have written an article or
two for it. One of the best free promotion strategies is to send
your articles to publications looking for articles.

Of course, we all know about ezines that use articles, but that's
just the tip of the iceberg. Many other publications need a
steady supply of articles, too. Most of these options are right
in front of you.

Send your articles to your local newspaper. Many have sections
for reader-written articles. Others can easily convert your
article with good advice into a feature story. Magazines of all
sizes look for articles from freelance writers. In many cases you
will need to contact the editor first and suggest our
article topic.

Pennysavers and shoppers--those free or cheap newspapers that
carry all ads such as Thrifty Nickle or The Recycler--are an easy
way to get your articles in front of the public. Many of these
papers like short articles to break up the endless array of
classified ads.

Trade publications read by those in your own profession can be
very effective. News about your profession is considered
important in these, whereas in a larger publication, it might be
thought of as insignificant.

situation. See his 10,000 no-cost marketing tips at

Marketing With Stick-em Notes

Sometimes low-tech marketing tools can be surprisingly effective.
If a lot of your prospects will be gathering in one place, try
marketing with Stick-em Notes.

You can have small yellow squares printed with your message to
stick here and there. Most small copy shops can handle the order
at low cost.

Because Stick-em glue is mild, the notes come off easily and
leave no mark. They're also just the right size for prospects to
stick in a pocket or slip in a day planner.

Recently I strolled through classrooms at the local community
college. Someone had distributed Stick-em notes with the headline
SUMMER WORK--$12.95 PER HR. Students were snapping them up. It
didn't hurt that the notes contained the advice "Please Do Not
Litter" at the bottom.

Be sure to include a headline of two to five words. Follow that
with some bulleted points that explain your offer, main feature,
and most important couple of benefits. Wrap it up with your
contact info.

Check local law and custom before launching your Stick-em
marketing campaign. You may need to get permission before
distributing in someone else's building or on their grounds.

Q: Kevin,

What's the cost for company to tie a product in with a new movie
release?

Thanks,

Joy

A: Joy,

The price would have to be negotiated with the movie,
distributor, etc. I would imagine it's pretty pricey. A lower
cost option would probably be to advertise in theaters before a
particular movie.

Sponsor a Contest, Get Publicity

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

People love contests. They love the anticipation, the suspense,
and the thrill of believing they would win something...anything.

I know several people who will call in to every radio contest
they hear about, even if they don't know what the prize is. The
simple idea of winning makes them want to enter.

Statistically, about 20% of the public will enter a contest if
asked. That may not sound like a huge percentage, but in total
numbers, that's a lot of people. If you asked 1,000 people to
enter your contest and 200 of them did, that's 200 more people
who know who you are.

Contests can really get people familiar with your business. And
if you put on a show or stage an event along with it, you could
get great word of mouth or even end up on the news. Give away a
product or service that relates to your business. Mention your
contest on your letterhead, website, and business cards. Do a
postcard campaign or send out a press release.

Be sure to let the public and other entrants know who won the
contest. This follow-up will remind people about the contest and
put your name back in their heads.

What Is Your Core Product?

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Since you can't efficiently market EVERYTHING you sell,
it is important to focus your advertising on your CORE
product, service, or idea.

This sounds simple enough. But in actual practice, many
businesses don't realize what their core product is.

For a long time I though copy writing was my core product.
It was the service almost all my customers wanted. But I
quickly learned it wasn't so much the writing customers
were coming for. They valued the free strategies and advice
I gave them.

In time I discovered I could get other writers to do the
writing, but customers complained if I wasn't there to offer
advice. My core product is advice, strategies, and
know-how.

Take a close look at your business. What is the one thing
customers value above all else about you? Put that one
thing front and center in your marketing.

Q: Kevin,

I've been thinking about how I might use an ezine to advertise my
nutritional products. I'm just not sure how it really works.
Should I try a one-time newsletter kind of mailing, or do a
weekly or monthly thing? Would it be worth the investment?

Thanks,

Lani

A: Lani,

An ezine is a great way to stay in touch with people who have
visited your site or contacted you for more information. Your
best bet is a regular, repeated newsletter. Many people will be
on your ezine list for weeks, months, even years before they buy
something. An ezine can bring you sales week after week, as long
as you're publishing it.

Best,

Kevin Nunley

Affiliate Programs: The Net's Favorite Marketing Method

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

A reader sent me this question from the Expert area of
Staples.com:

"I'm thinking of starting my own affiliate or referral program.
I know what the rewards are but what could be the risks in doing
this?"

Referral and affiliate programs are the number one marketing
method on the Web. If someone promotes your business and helps
you sell a product or service, you give them a cut of the sale.
Commissions range from 5% to 75% in some cases.

There are a number of firms that will set up your affiliate
program with software to track sales. SimpleAffiliate.com has a
very low-cost system. MyAffiliateProgram.com is easy to set up
and very reliable.

Of course, there are some downsides as you mention. With so many
companies offering affiliate programs, it can be a challenge to
get people excited about yours. Your best bet is to create a
specialized referral program that appeals to a core group of
business people. For example, if you sell computer software, you
could create a program directed at teachers or computer repair
outlets.

Market To Yourself

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Usually we talk about how to market your product or service to
prospects. But that leaves out one very important person--YOU!

As the economy has gotten tighter, we've seen a lot of very good
business ideas go by the wayside. In many cases, the owner had
to face difficult challenges. The problems could have been
overcome but the owner just felt too down to go on.

During these times it is important to market to yourself. You
must be able to face problems while keeping your enthusiasm and
belief in your project.

Keep your optimism by realizing that many of the fears we have
aren't that firmly rooted in reality. Something bad happens and
we immediately imagine a whole string of disasters that could
follow. In the end, things are never as bad as we imagine.

Remind yourself most of your fears never materialize. The
optimist who keeps smiling even when things look grim probably
has a point.

Keep your enthusiasm going. It's hard to accomplish anything
without true passion and motivation for your work. I often
create a new service or add a small improvement to an existing
service just to keep my own enthusiasm up.

Remind yourself that all things in business require patience. We
may want it NOW, but the world is rarely ready to let us have it
that fast.

web site copy, press releases, and ads since 1996. His

Q: Kevin,

I have an e-newsletter where I give tips on running an Internet
business. My question is, each issue I try to give new programs
that are good and report programs that are scams. Should I just
rotate opportunities each issue or only include a few each time?
I generally introdcue 5 or 6 opportunites each issue which is
every other or third day. Is that to many opportunities?

I don't get many takers, but I have only had a newletter for 2
1/2 months now and already 1005 people have opted in to read it.

I must be doing somthing good to keep them as subscribers--but
they won't sign up for the business opportunites.

Any idea how to resolve it so I get more sign-ups?

Barbara

A: Barbara,

I agree you're doing something right. 1005 subscribers in less
than 3 months is very good. You might do better to include
around 3 opportunities in each issue. It may take more time for
people to start to completely trust your information and sign up
for the opportunities. Keep the good information coming and it
will happen.

Best,

Kevin Nunley
