Promise to Tell a Secret

Here's an advertising trick some people are using very
successfully these days. Promise to tell a secret. It gets your
prospect's attention and holds it while you deliver your sales
message.

Your ad copy headline could start...

"What they aren't telling you...."

"What the bank isn't telling you..."

"Two things the IRS doesn't want you to know..."

"The one thing you MUST do...."

"Two things that are keeping YOU from being successful..."

Some go so far as to call their product "The World's Greatest
Money-Making Secret"...or something similar.

People all over the world, but American's especially, are always
interested in hearing about a new product or service that will
give them an instant and easy advantage.

You can even stretch out your ad into a long sales letter, 12 to
15 pages long, promising the reader you will give them the secret
if they will just keep reading. While they read, you are selling
them on your product and its benefits. In the end, you get
specific about your product showing that it is the secret you
have been talking about.

Sound hokey? Notice how many direct mail pieces, TV shows, and
Internet sites use this technique.

Watch For These Signs the Customer is READY to BUY!

The more expensive your product or service, the more time it
takes to sell it. Customers want to know all about how it works
and what it can do to make their life or business better. Help
them work through this process and you will make more sales.

Here are a few signs customers give you when they are ready to
buy.

The customer suddenly speeds up the pace. She has decided she
wants to buy and is moving with more purpose toward the sale.

Some people are just the opposite. They slow down the pace when
they get serious about buying. Rush them and you will lose the
sale.

Your customer starts asking a lot of questions. Remember that
customers only ask about things that really matter to them. Take
this as a good sign you've got a serious prospect.

Others will ask all about terms of payment, delivery, and
guarantees even before they tell you which item they want. They
feel more comfortable doing this because they can show serious
interest in buying without letting you know exactly what they
want to buy.

Make Your Template Website Sell

Websites designed from templates account for at least 80 percent
of the business sites on the Net. Chances are you or your web
designer used a template to design your site.

That is a good thing. Templates let you have an attractive,
professional site without paying a lot of money -- or any money
at all. But there are a few problems that keep many template
sites from selling their most.

* Templates emphasize graphics while minimizing copy. Most
template sites simply don't have enough writing to explain your
business and sell your products or services.

* Templates tend to keep YOUR personality from shining. Your site
looks slick, but probably looks like a lot of other sites and
doesn't let visitors get an honest feel for you and your company.

* Template sites frequently don't give search engines what they
need to list your site where customers and prospects can find
you.

Simple Solutions

Don't worry. There are some very SIMPLE changes that will make
your template website perform like a million bucks.

1. Add plenty of copy to your pages. Write 100 to 300 words for
your home page. That is the first page visitors see and many are
reluctant to click to other pages if they don't have basic
questions answered on the home page.

List your features or services and add a benefit or two with
each. For example: Plumber Jason Jones repairs plumbing fast and
at reasonable cost. You get back to your normal life without
waiting and you save money!

Most template sites have type that is rather small. If a lot of
your customers are middle age or older, make your type at least
12 point or medium sized. People who have to squint to read tend
not to buy.

2. Fill out your "About" page and "Contact" pages. Tell your
story with a full page on your About page. Start your contact
page with a paragraph that covers how you can help people when
they call or email.

3. Be sure to include a Title for your home page. The Title is
the line that appears at the top of your browser. That's what
search engines look for first when deciding how to list your
site.

Far too many template sites have a title that says "home page."
Instead, change the title to your name, your city, and a few
words to explain what you do.

For example: Plumber Jason Jones in Centertown, Iowa 555-555-1212

Anyone who searches Google for a "plumber Centertown, Iowa" will
likely find Jason at the top of the heap.

While you're at it, fill out the description meta tag at the top
of your home page's html code. This is the description that
search engines will use with your link. Make your description a
short ad for your site.

Going back to our plumber example: Centertown, IA Plumber Jason
Jones is prompt, good, and low cost. Call 555-555-1212.

4. Finally, resist the temptation to fill your home page with too
many widgets and applications. Many template services, like the
highly popular Wordpress, let you simply click a button to add a
calendar, a survey, or stock photos. I see some sites that have
so many of these do-dads there's not enough room left to learn
about the business.

Know Your Customer

The better you can describe your best customers, the more
products and services you can sell.

What newspapers, magazines, and e-zines do they read? What topics
interest them most? What groups or associations do they belong
to?

You can devise a questionnaire to send to your best customers and
prospects. Entice them with a free offer or a big discount.

Many actors start developing their character by writing down a
long list of words that describe the character. This helps the
actor think deeply about the part they are going to play.

This strategy works well to help you figure out what kind of
people buy often. You likely know far more about your prospects
and customers than you realize. This method helps you get a
clearer understanding of what you probably already know.

Get Your Product Ready FIRST!

Those of us who love to promote often fall into the trap of
promoting before our product or service is ready to hit the
market.

A local independent film maker had the good fortune of convincing
former basketball MVP Karl Malone to star in his movie. The story
was about an important historic tale that got the whole community
talking. When word leaked out that Malone was going to be in a
movie, the producer got offers from major network talk shows.

Even though the movie was far from finished, he couldn't pass up
all the publicity. Over and over the media fanned enthusiasm for
his film, and again and again the public was frustrated to find
out the movie was nowhere near release.

Later, when the movie finally appeared, it flopped. Public
enthusiasm had evaporated. Few people saw it and it failed to get
wide distribution.

Make sure your new product or service is ready to hit the ground
running before your promotion campaign begins. People who hear
about your new development, but find they can't buy it, are
unlikely to ever come back.

Market Through Your Library

I picked up a marketing book at my local library, opened the
cover, and found a sticker "Donated by Iroquois Insurance Group."
Since I think this a great book, I'm impressed that the folks at
Iroquois apparently liked to too. I'm also grateful that they
gave it to the library. This is great subtle advertising for
Iroquois Insurance.

Your razor sharp business mind is probably already analyzing this
situation. The manager at Iroquois probably had no part in
choosing this book. His likely gives a contribution to the
library each year with the request that they use the money to buy
business books. The librarian purchases several well-reviewed
books and places Iroquois' name on the cover.

Many libraries have programs like this. The huge number of new
books appearing every month put a lot of pressure on libraries to
buy new books and remove old ones. This is expensive, especially
with tax support evaporating in many communities.

People who visit libraries are often the movers, shakers, and
idea makers in your community. Market to them via a tax-
deductible contribution to your local library. It's personal and
effective.

When talking on the phone with Harold, ask him "I'm in touch with
Mary and Jim. Is there anyone I'm overlooking that might be
interested in this?" Don't be surprised if Harold rattles off
several other perfect prospects you don't know or didn't think
about. Your contact list has just expanded with pre-qualified
prospects.

Joan Guiducci, author of "Power Calling," suggests you use this
line: "It occurred to me that manufacturing should hear about our
plan. Where do you suggest I start?" Also: "I'm having a hard
time getting through to Mark. Do you have any suggestion on who
else I could start with?"

Keep Notes on Your Customers

This tip sounds a bit sneaky, but customers love it. From time to
time customers may tell you about something going on in their
life. "My daughter is graduating next week" or "Product X is our
best seller" or "My team won the championship."

Write down those revelations for later use. Refer back to your
notes right before placing a phone call or composing an e-mail to
the customer.

Notice how personal and natural this conversation sounds:

"Is your daughter enjoying being a graduate? She's going to State
U? You're probably looking for a low-cost computer for her. I
have a great new budget model that fits into any space and is
loaded with the software that a college student needs."

Customers are impressed when you remember things about their life
or business. They don't know you are reading from notes. The
customer feels important. They think they are getting your
special attention. In the end, that is the most powerful tool you
can use to entice people to buy.
